Where San Antonio's water comes from — and why it's so hard.

San Antonio Water System (SAWS) draws from two primary sources: the Edwards Aquifer and Canyon Lake via the Guadalupe River. The Edwards Aquifer is a limestone karst aquifer — water filters through calcium- and magnesium-rich limestone formations for years before being pumped. That process naturally loads the water with dissolved minerals.

The result is water that measures 17–20 grains per gallon (gpg) — classified as "very hard" by the U.S. Geological Survey. For reference, water above 7 gpg is considered hard. San Antonio regularly ranks among the top 10 hardest-water cities in the United States.

SAWS treats this water to meet all EPA and TCEQ standards before it reaches your tap. The water is safe to drink. The hardness itself is not a health concern — but its impact on your plumbing, water heaters, and appliances is significant and measurable.

Edwards Aquifer

A limestone karst aquifer that spans 180 miles across south-central Texas. Supplies roughly 50% of SAWS demand. Water naturally acquires high calcium and magnesium concentrations as it percolates through limestone formations.

Canyon Lake / Guadalupe River

Surface water source treated at the H2Oaks Center in Lytle. Supplements the aquifer during high-demand periods. Slightly softer than aquifer water but still hard by national standards.

SAWS Treatment

SAWS adds chloramine (a chlorine-ammonia compound) as a disinfectant, adjusts pH, and treats for clarity. The treatment process does not reduce water hardness — that remains at naturally occurring levels through your tap.

Yes. SAWS water meets all EPA and TCEQ drinking water standards. The hardness — while very high — is not a health concern. The disinfectant (chloramine) is used by water utilities across the country and is safe at regulated levels. Some people prefer filtered water due to taste from high TDS and chloramine, but the tap water is not unsafe.

High TDS (total dissolved solids) gives SA water a mineral or slightly salty taste that many people notice compared to low-TDS bottled water. Chloramine also imparts a faint chemical taste that activated carbon filtration removes effectively. A countertop or under-sink RO (reverse osmosis) filter eliminates both of these taste factors and produces water comparable to high-end bottled water.

In copper and metal pipes, hard water can actually provide a slight protective effect — calcium deposits form a thin coating on the inside that can reduce corrosion. However, in small-diameter pipes and fittings, the same scale eventually restricts flow. The biggest damage is to water heater tanks and heating elements, dishwasher valves, washing machine components, and tankless heater heat exchangers.

Chloramine is a combination of chlorine and ammonia used as a secondary disinfectant. SAWS switched from free chlorine to chloramines to reduce disinfection byproducts (DBPs) that form when chlorine reacts with organic matter. Chloramine is safe for drinking at regulated levels.
